Enjoy the Best of Clarksburg Wine Country

People wine tasting

When it comes to California wine, Napa and Sonoma get all the attention. But there’s a lesser-known wine region that’s also worth a visit: Clarksburg Wine Country. Located in southern Yolo County, Clarksburg has everything you’d expect in a wine getaway: picturesque tasting rooms, rolling vineyards, and, of course, great wines!

Clarksburg is located west of Elk Grove off South River Road, a scenic stretch that hugs the Sacramento River. Along the route are historic bridges, roadside farms, and rows upon rows of grapevines. Water views are around every bend, with boats chugging up and down the river and locals fishing from the riverbanks.

Anchoring the Clarksburg area is the Old Sugar Mill, a retired sugar beet refinery that now houses 14 local tasting rooms pouring everything from Chardonnay to Zinfandel. You can grab a bite to eat from the weekend food trucks, hear local music, and attend special events such as vendor fairs and release parties.

Bogle Vineyards Tasting Room

Another notable Clarksburg winery is Miner’s Leap Winery. Manicured landscaping and outdoor tables make for a pleasant afternoon sipping hand-crafted varietals. Numerous special events are held throughout the year, including concerts, holiday celebrations, and wine and food pairings.

Further west is Julietta Winery, a tranquil oasis with an expansive lawn and sunset views of the vineyards and coastal range beyond. Julietta has live music and events such as wine dinners and an annual grape stomp.

Heading south, you’ll come across Heringer Estates, which holds tastings in a restored heritage barn. Local bands, DJ dancing, and seasonal events (think caramel apple pairing in the fall!) round out the experience. Oh, and don’t pass on the Delta Freeze Wine Slushy — it’s the perfect warm-weather treat.

One of the largest players in the Clarksburg wine scene is Bogle Family Vineyards, a nationally known producer that offers intimate tasting experiences on its “Home Ranch” in Clarksburg. Visitors can choose from curated flights served on a second-floor deck with views of the property, or sip varietals and blends on a vineyard-side picnic table. Bogle also hosts special events, including movie nights and wine dinners.

If you’re looking for a unique tasting experience, hop on board the Sacramento River Cruise, which departs from the Clarksburg Marina. The private, 2-hour cruises feature local wine flights, craft beer, cheese, and charcuterie sourced from local and international producers.

Husicks Taphouse

Hungry after all that wine tasting? There are several spots in the Clarksburg area to fill your belly. Husick’s Taphouse is a casual BBQ joint that serves tri-tip, ribs, and sandwiches. They also have live music and trivia nights. Another good bet is Dinky Diner, a teeny tiny spot with riverfront picnic tables offering water views. The menu features burgers, dogs, fries, and shakes.

If you’re looking to make a weekend out of a visit to Clarksburg Wine Country, there are several lodging options. West Sacramento is just minutes away, with two spots to rest your head: Hampton Inn & Suites and Home2 Suites, both modern hotels providing free breakfast.
