Yolo County is a great place to visit any time of year, but it’s especially impressive when the landscape is blanketed with seasonal blooms. Come spring, its scenic farmlands come alive with blossoms and flowers, drawing visitors with its dazzling displays.
A new podcast, “Yolo County: Indulge in the Authentic” takes a look at the seasonal blooms found throughout Yolo County, including the world-renowned almond blossoms that appear in early spring, the pale pink prune blossoms that appear when the weather warms, and the vibrant lavender that marks the first days of summer.
Hosted by award-winning travel writer Aaron Millar, the fifth episode in the series features three Yolo County farmers: Laura Gordon of Cadena Farm in Esparto, Corinne Martinez of Berryessa Gap Vineyards, and Sherri Wood of Capay Valley Lavender.
When to See the Almond Blossoms in Yolo County
In the podcast, Gordon explains that the almond blossoms typically begin to appear in mid-February, turning from white to pink as the days go by. One of the most popular times to visit the Capay Valley is during the Almond Festival, which is typically held on the last weekend in February. She says seeing the orchards blanketed with the delicate white-pink blossoms is nothing less than surreal.
Yolo County’s Springtime Blooms
Another spectacular show of blooms occurs at the tail end of almond blossom season, when the prune trees show off their pale pink blooms. In the podcast, Corinne Martinez of Berryessa Gap Vineyards tells Millar the best time to spot the blossoms is mid-March, and the best way to see them is via a driving tour or a hot air balloon ride.
Summer Lavender in Yolo County
Next, Millar speaks with Sherri Wood of Capay Valley Lavender. She explained that there’s nothing like a day spent visiting the lavender farm surrounded by purple blossoms, which typically appear in mid-May and last through June. She added that not only are the lavender blossoms beautiful, they are also edible, and visitors can snack on lavender scones and shortbread during a farm visit.
Yolo County: From Springtime to Harvest Time
In the podcast, Millar explains that another great time to visit Yolo County is during harvest season. Watching local farmers harvest their crops gives visitors a first-hand look into what makes Yolo County the agricultural powerhouse it is today.
