The riverside suburb of West Sacramento may seem like an unusual choice for a weekend getaway, but its unending river views, outdoor activities, and great breweries and restaurants make it an undiscovered gem.
Just a hop, a skip and a jump across the river from downtown Sacramento, West Sacramento is a small Yolo County city known for its family-friendly neighborhoods and community activities. But visitors will also find themselves appreciating everything the burgeoning region has to offer.
For starters, Sutter Health Park is located in West Sacramento, home of the region’s only professional baseball team, the Sacramento River Cats, a Triple-A affiliate of the San Francisco Giants. Watching a minor league baseball game is one of the simple pleasures of living in the region. Sutter Health Park hosts plenty of other events as well, including concerts, festivals and holiday celebrations.
Sutter Health Park is located within the Bridge District, a lively area that stretches along the Sacramento River. Nearby is River Walk Park, a leafy greenspace with walking trails and spectacular views of the Sacramento city skyline and Old Sacramento. There’s a paved trail (great for biking!) that takes you along the waterside, past the scenic Tower Bridge and all the way to the Mill Street Pier, a historic shipping pier that makes for great selfies with its multi-dimensional “WEST” illuminated art piece. Speaking of art, the River Walk also has public art along its path, including a piece called “Subtile,” made up of 34,000 stainless steel plates that shimmer in the breeze.
The Bridge District is where you’ll find Drake’s: The Barn, a community gathering spot that has a lovely outdoor beer garden complete with fire pits, live music, games, and food. It’s kid- and dog-friendly, and they also host special events such as outdoor movie nights, yoga, trivia, and vendor fairs.
Speaking of beer, West Sacramento has no shortage of craft breweries to enjoy! In addition to the beer at The Barn (25 on tap, to be exact), West Sacramento is also home to Bike Dog Brewing, a craft brewery that, unsurprisingly, welcomes your four-legged pals. They also have food trucks on site most nights and host game nights, trivia nights, and live music in the summer.
Hungry? One of the best spots in West Sacramento grab a bite to eat is Franquette, a charming French-inspired café and wine bar. The friendly neighborhood spot features modern design and natural elements, and has a tidy outdoor patio for al fresco dining. Casual French cuisine dominates the menu, with choices such as beef tartare, duck confit, and quiche. Breakfast and brunch are especially popular, with decadent pastries including a seasonal galette and walnut croissant. Naturally, they offer a selection of French wines as well.
For your weekend getaway in West Sacramento, there are several lodging options. Both Hampton Inn & Suites and Home2Suites offer modern, comfortable guest rooms, fitness centers, and swimming pools. They also have pet-friendly rooms, free WiFi and free hot breakfast as well. If you’re looking for a relaxing weekend getaway with river views, great food, and craft beer, consider putting West Sacramento on your bucket list!
