Explore Yolo County Wines

Introducing Fresh Press, a colorful, slightly messy, sometimes sticky month of entertaining and educational wine experiences.

Just beyond Sacramento or an hour from San Francisco – off the beaten path but closer than you think, the wineries you’ll visit for Fresh Press will showcase not only their newly crushed and possibly still fermenting 2022 vintage wines but also their current release wines. You will find outstanding familiar varietals such as Syrah, Chardonnay, Zinfandel, Tempranillo and Cabernet Sauvignon as well as more unique varietals like Viognier, Malbec, Primitivo, Albarino as well as Sparkling Port to name a few.

Yolo County’s Place In California’s Wine Legacy

In 1969, Dan Martinez, Sr., a first-generation farmer of Spanish immigrants, and Ernie Peninou, a winemaker and wine historian, partnered to create the first grapevine rootstock nursery in Yolo County that would become renown in the Napa and Sonoma Valleys and beyond. Yolo Hills Viticultural Society, now operating as Martinez Orchards, helped fuel the rapid growth of California’s wine industry from a few dozen wineries in the 1970s to the thousands that now exist.

Wine grapes are currently the third largest value crop in Yolo County.  Our wine region is home to three AVAs (Capay Valley, Clarksburg, and Dunnigan Hills), as well as one pending (Winters Highlands). Each of our AVA’s has unique growing conditions and distinctive wines as a result.  While there are multiple producers of Tempranillo, Petite Sirah, Malbec, Grenache and Syrah reds, as well as Chardonnay, Sauvignon blanc, Albariño and Verdejo whites, no single grape or wine variety is grown by every producer in Yolo County.

Exploring Yolo County wines aligns to exploring the surrounding agricultural setting both in the countryside as well as in the cities within the county.  A visit to Yolo County to taste wine is an experience that is rooted in agricultural history.  A number of wineries in Yolo County are owned and operated by farming families who run a variety of other agricultural businesses.

California wine country definitely has its roots in Yolo County.
