Now Open: The Jan Shrem & Maria Manetti Shrem Museum of Art

Shrem MuseumThe Manetti Shrem Museum, a visible landmark along Interstate 80 that welcomes visitors on a major gateway to the UC Davis campus, opened its doors this November. It is a magnificent facility, full of eye-popping works of art, and thanks to the generosity of museum donors and partners, admission is free to everyone.

Greeting visitors is the building’s Grand Canopy, a porous roof of steel and aluminum that floats atop more than 44,000 square feet of indoor and outdoor space. Passers-by will be coaxed inside as they see Art Wide Open through curved glass walls and entry doors that visually connect outdoors and indoors. Additional concrete walls double as viewing surfaces for projected artwork and other uses, setting the stage for after-hours programming.

Inside, visitors may explore contemporary art and ideas. A community education room serves multiple programming purposes, furthering the museum’s role in creating opportunities for campus and community interaction. Owing to UC Davis’ continuing concern for the environment, the museum employs many energy-saving features, including LED, occupancy-controlled lighting in its galleries.

Hours are Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday noon-6pm, Thursday noon-10pm, Saturday and Sunday 11am-5pm. For current exhibitions and more information, call the museum at (530) 752-8500 or visit the web at http://manettishremmuseum.ucdavis.edu/.

The museum is on Old Davis Road, kitty-corner from the Mondavi Center for the Performing Arts at the campus’s south entry.  Parking is available at the Gateway Parking Structure and Visitor Parking Lot 1, both next door to the museum. Parking permits are required weekdays 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. (permit available for purchase in yellow boxes at the garage entry and in VP1–half day $4.50, all day $9) and during events when attendants are present.
